3:40 PM Case Study: How Central Queensland University Utilised UCroo © to Enhance the Experience of the Online Student

As Australia’s largest regional university and a long-time proponent of distance education, CQUniversity has around half of its higher education cohort – some 12,000 students – studying wholly online. With online studies carrying a higher risk of attrition, it is essential that CQUniversity has strategies in place to engage and connect with its off-campus students. One such solution has been Ucroo, a university-centric social media platform implemented in 2016. While not unique to CQUniversity, the platform has had strong traction with nearly 18,000 student users opting in within 18 months. An internal research project demonstrated that students who signed up with Ucroo had a significantly lower attrition rate than the institutional average, and when these students connected with peers online at an early stage of their studies, they felt more connected to the University. In this session Chris and Sarah-Joy explain the ups and downs of implementation, including:

  • Promoting and incentivising student uptake and ongoing usage of the platform
  • Getting academic and professional staff buy-in and the impact of integrating coursework into the platform
  • Post-implementation learnings and ongoing improvement based on user feedback
